Advocacy - Ability Resources provides information and support
to consumers, schools and businesses concerning legal and civil rights
such as those stipulated in the Americans
with Disabilities Act, the Individuals
with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation
Act. We also help consumers secure benefits from public
institutions. In addition, Ability Resources helps focus the attention
of the community on quality-of-life issues of special importance to
people with disabilities. Also available is information about pending
local and national legislation and how to contact legislators
.
Benefits Planning-
Ability Resources educates consumers about how
working may affect their Socialy Security Income and/or Social Security
Dissability Insurance benefits.
Case Management-
Since 1994, Ability Resources
has provided case management services under the ADvantage Program. As a
case management agency, Ability Resources coordinates the services that
consumers who are at high risk of premature entry into nursing homes
need to remain in the community. These services include personal-care
assistance, homemaker services, home-delivered meals, physical therapy,
home modifications, equipment, prescriptions, etc. Ability Resources'
case managers, with their knowledge of the available resources,
experience in service delivery to people with disabilities, and
familiarity with the federal and state system, provide this service to
approximately 200 consumers in the northeastern section of the state.
Equipment Donations- We gladly accept donations of used medical equipment
ranging from walkers and wheelchairs to hospital bed frames, furniture, and
home furnishings. As items are donated, we give back to the community by
donating the items we receive to our consumers in need. If you would like
to donate something and are unsure if we could use it, please call us.
Independent Living
Counseling - Our
Independent Living counselors provide assistance to individuals in
finding: accessible housing, medical equipment/supplies,and emergency
assistance, as well as providing applications for programs
through the Department of Human Services, the Department of
Rehabilitaiton Services, the Social Security Administration, and
others. We also offer independent living assessments through the
VA, and résumé critiques.
Multicultural Outreach-
Provides services to individuals with disabilities and their families from
multicultural backgrounds. Our Spanish speaking
counselor assists individuals in finding medical
equipment and supplies, locating accessible housing, providing and obtaining
counseling and finding related information. Individuals can also receive help applying
for benefits.
Transportation- Learn
to use the city bus, apply to see if you are eligible for the
curb-to-curb LIFT program, or apply for the Transportation Assistance
for Seniors Program. Ability Resources has teaching and monitoring
programs to support these services.
